We work with two different programs that support youth education through work experience.
This is a collaborative project between West Sonoma County High School, West County Community Services, the Department of Rehabilitation, and employers wishing to assist young adults in work experience. The program is funded through the State of California Dept. of Rehabilitation for qualified special needs students who require additional assistance while juniors and/or seniors, as well as after they leave high school, in preparing for employment.
This is a win/win opportunity for us. We have young adults with an interest in working with animals, who can spend additional quality time with the dogs. They play, bathe, groom, and brush the dogs. They also work with them on basic obedience and training. This activity builds confidence and self-esteem in the participants, and aids them in communication skills.
This nonprofit organization is located in West Sebastopol, and provides a group/foster home for young adults. TLC is dedicated to providing permanence, shelter, education, guidance, emotional healing and support to emotionally challenged youth.
Almost Home Doggie Day Care provides a setting for TLC residents to gain work experience, and develop self-assurance. At AH the TLC youths have the opportunity to assume responsibilities, earn trust, develop skills, practice independence, and become active community members.
We share many of TLC's values, and appreciate that TLC is committed to affirming cultural diversity , sensitivity, and valuing of human differences. Those same traits are transferable to understanding dogs; breeds, temperaments, and personalities.
